Grapeseed Oil is a vegetable oil that is made from the pressing of grape seeds (which is a byproduct of winemaking). It has been growing in popularity because of its health benefits.
Grapeseed oil is sourced from wine-growing Mediterranean regions. It is produced during the wine-making process by separating the grape seeds out and pressing them separately from the wine. In recent years, it has become a typical ingredient to use in skincare, specifically in lotions and body butters.
The main attraction of using grapeseed oil in skincare is that is good for all skin types, making it a useful base ingredient. You can use grapeseed oil purely on its own or in combination with other carrier oils. (Using alone, it is a great night serum to use on your face similar to rosehip seed oil) It is mostly used in products designed for acne & mature or aging skin.
Grapeseed oil helps to seal in moisture which helps to give the skin more elasticity and reduces the signs of wrinkles and fine lines. Its fat content ensures soft supple skin while also retaining moisture to give the appearance of softer skin. Because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it has quickly become a favorite to use among base carrier oils.
We use grapeseed oil as a base in most of our body butters, serums, elixirs and various other anhydrous products. We find it to be a wonderful base to blend with other higher quality, fatty oils. We also use grapeseed oil as part of a selection of base ingredients that we use for formulations using new ingredients.
